## Legal Framework

ITR filing is mandatory under the Income Tax Act 1961 if your income exceeds the basic exemption limit.

**Income Tax Act 1961, Section 139(1):** Every person whose total income exceeds the basic exemption limit (₹3 lakh under new regime, ₹2.5 lakh under old regime) must file an ITR by July 31 of the assessment year.

**Section 234F — Late filing fee:** If ITR is filed after July 31, a late fee of ₹5,000 applies (₹1,000 if total income ≤ ₹5 lakh). Filing after December 31 is not permitted for the relevant AY.

**Section 87A Rebate (FY 2025-26):** New regime — full tax rebate if taxable income ≤ ₹12 lakh. Effective tax = ₹0 for income up to ₹12.75 lakh after standard deduction.

**Section 80C deductions (old regime):** Up to ₹1.5 lakh deduction for PPF, ELSS, LIC premium, home loan principal, tuition fees.
